Getting to know the little people

After proclaiming himself king Ivan decided that his people needed to see and get to know him.

Ivan walked out of the castle and down a street to the plaza. Entering the market, Ivan was bombarded by a barrage of sights smells and noises. Smiling he took it all in. After standing there for a moment he walked over to a fish merchant and asked him how he was doing.

"good morning fine sir! How goes the business?"

The man looked up a bit surprised and said, "not terribbly good sir."

"And why is that" Ivan asked.

"Well i'm not sure there much a single knight could do about it"

"Nonsense man, do you not know who I am?" Ivan asked, without waiting for the man to respond he said "I am your king and i am here to help you!"

The man gave a start when he heard that Ivan was the King, and he hasty bowed as low as his stiff clothes would allow him.

"Forgive me my lord i didn't know it was you"

"But now you do, so what seems to be the matter?" Ivan asked the merchant.

"Well you see sir, it's this other merchant, he hires thieves to come and steal all of my best fish and if i try to resist they beat me and take all of my fish, I just don't know what to do!" Through out this little speech the merchant had slowly broken down and by the time he had finished speaking there were tears running down his face. The merchant wiped away the tears and said in a small unsteady voice, "I'm sorry for that sir, I'm not sure what came over me."

"it's ok" Ivan consoled, "When do these thieves come?"

"well usually in the morning when i'm setting up but recently they've been coming by during the day" the merchant responded.

"don't worry" Ivan said patting the man on the shoulder, "i'll see what i can do."

Ivan walked of and sat on a bench near by, waiting and watching for one of these "thieves".

Ivan sat and waited... and waited... and waited. Soon he began to wonder if the thieves were going to come at all.

Then he saw something out of the corner of his eye, a figure clad in black leather making his way toward the merchant's stall. Ivan sat up straighter and watched. The man glanced around then went over to the merchant and began conversing with him, the merchant had a scared look on his face and his gaze flick ed to Ivan now and then.

Ivan decided that this must be the thief so he stood up and calmly walked up behind the man.

The man was so busy threatening the merchant that he didn't notice Ivan until he was right behind him.

The man wiped around to stare at Ivan. Ivan noticed a dagger on the man's belt and made a mental note to watch out for it.

"now is there something that you want from this Merchant or do you just enjoy talking to people?" Ivan asked.

The man quickly retorted, "it's none of your business Oaf" and started to turn back to the merchant.

Ivan grabbed the man's shoulder and turned him around to face him, he smiled cruelly and said, "Oh, but it is my business. What happens in a kings kingdom is always his business."

A look of understanding crossed the man's eyes and he broke away from Ivan's grasp and tried to run for it. Before he could go two steps Ivan slammed his fist in to his gut and the man doubled over. Ivan smiled proud with his work. But the theif could take a punch and took that moment to give Ivan a quick kick to the side, surprising Ivan and sending him staggering back a few feet.

Ivan quil;y recovered and as the teif turned to run away he tackled him to the ground.

as they fell the theif drew out his knife and once on the ground attempted to stab Ivan's arms and Hands. The Theif managed to hit Ivan once but it wasn't very deep. As he raised the dagger for another strike Ivan quickly hit the man's hand as hard as he could sending the dagger spinning away.

The thief wiggle out from under Ivan and turned to face him. Ivan quickly stood and drew his sword.

"it's over" he said pointing the blade at the thief's chest.

The man looked at the blade and turned to run. At that moment he was tackled by three guards.

Ivan smiled and sheathed his sword.

"Take him to the dungeon" he told the guards, "Oh, and leave one man to help guard this man's fish" he said pointing at the Merchant.

The merchant thanked Ivan profusely and attempted to give him gold and fish. Ivan refused saying, "you need this more than I do."

Ivan walked out of the market with a smile on his face. One law breaker down, he thought, a whole bunch more to go.

He walked back up to the castle and sat down on the throne, "Now" he said, "What are the latest scouting reports". He could get used to this life he thought.
