Cadfael Ken'ill, having finished his studies and feeling prepared to begin his journey.  As he had could not go straight to the East, and lacked the strength to conquer the land, even if he could, he determined to go north, to the land that had supposedly spawned the runes.  While he had never used a rune, he understood that he would need some form of assistance to take the East, and that he could find some in the runes.
Having thus made up his mind, he set out from his home in the Earth District of the Imperial City.  He journeyed to the border with the North, seeking passage across the channel.  On the way he ran across a merchant caravan heading to the Northern Village.  Seeing them in the distance he picked up his pace so as to catch up to them.
Hello there,” he shouted as he got closer (seventy-feet), “Could you use an extra guard, or perhaps just a fellow traveler to talk to along the way?
The caravan master looked him up and down, taking in the leather armor and the scar running down the right side of his face.  “I’m afraid I have all the guards I need at the moment, sonny.  I don’t have the coin to hire anyone else,” said the merchant, voice full of contempt for the shabby young man who lacked even a metal weapon.
Disappointed, Cadfael continued on alone, slowly outdistancing the laden wagons.  Alone with his thoughts, he went back through his years of training, preparing him to command and lead.  He remembered the night he had gotten his scar, fleeing his homeland.  It had been a bad day.  His family had just received notice of his brother’s death in the army, and then two days later the village had been raided, and his family put to the sword.  He had escaped, but it had left its scars, only one of which was visible.  And so he strode onwards, in search of the strength he needed to live up to his name and his promise.

So sayeth the prince of battle.
